Description

Get a glimpse of what Chicago life was like in 1893 — the year the Chicago World’s Fair came to town — on this deliciously entertaining, small-group walking tour. Led by a costumed actress playing Bertha Palmer, a socialite and philanthropist who was a Chicago celebrity at the turn of the 20th century, the tour will include sightseeing, five samples of local dishes, and Bertha Palmer’s “memories” of the World’s Fair.

Enjoy a perspective on Chicago like no other on this unique, 3.5-hour food and walking tour. The small-group tour aims to immerse you in the milieu of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair — when more than 27 million people came to town to see 65,000 different exhibits — and you’ll be guided around the local sights by an actress playing Bertha Palmer, known as “Chicago’s Gold Coast Queen.”

Convene with Bertha at The Cliff Dweller’s Club, and be sure to come hungry: included in the ticket price are samples of five favorite local dishes, which together add up to a satisfying meal.

The tour begins within The Cliff Dweller’s Club, a private members’ club that offers beautiful views of the city. Enjoy a meal and sample the famous Burnham pie (available in cherry, peach, blueberry, or apple) while Bertha regales you with stories about the Chicago World’s Fair.

From there, you’ll visit four other Chicago landmarks: the Palmer House Hotel, where you’ll indulge in a chocolate dessert inspired by Bertha Palmer herself; The Century Room, where root beer and another food surprise will be the order of the day; the Chicago Pedway, a network of tunnels and bridges where you can enjoy a popcorn snack; and The Pittsfield Building, where beautiful architecture will be paired with a Chicago-style hot dog, a dish that made its debut at the Chicago World’s Fair.
