New Trier Township High School Winnetka Reviews

This is an incredible school, and much better than the Northfield Campus. It's certainly for the kids with higher abilities, but its also why they have levels, and with the elite qualities of the grammar schools the kids come into the school with, it really should be no problem to get an amazing education. If you find people you get along with, you will be very happy with your experience. Also, you must work, unlike in other schools. I suppose it really depends on what you want to achieve and your overall perspective on the school.

I went to NT for 2 years before I transferred. I was under an unbelievable amount of pressure and I couldn't even pursue extracurriculars because there were too many other students who have been trained in a sport since pre-school. I actually ended up transferring to Evanston Twp and had a much better experience because while there still was a very competitive atmosphere, it wasn't as intense as NT and when they said no cut, they meant it. If your child is not athletically or academically priviliged then I wouldn't sen dthem there.

While NT is academically excellent and challenging with many support services i wonder if I did my children a disservice sending them here. The school is a pressure cooker, the sports teams exclude a high percentage of the student body but I mostly worry about the overly sophisticated atmosphere wit too much of everything. The students live as though attending an adult cocktail party where to many parents similarly are trying to buy access for their kids and an awfully heavy note on materialism is a particularly strong note. The overly sophisticated scene may be part of todays culture but it is especially exaggerated here at New Trier

Fantastic school but it's about time they opened the Northfield Campus up as an entirely separate campus to avoid overcrowding. With over 4,000 students they could easily split it up so that about 2,000 students go to each to match the student populations of surrounding schools.

My child the oldest of five attended NT for one year and we moved her to a smaller private school. We found it far too large and worried about our kids falling through the cracks. The athletics are only for the top athletes and even the clubs cut kids. Our kids are in a smaller private school where there is a strong emphasis on a well rounded child. The academics are tougher because the class sizes are smaller and you have to be on top of your work every day. There is no hiding behind the other 26 kids in the class as there was at NT. I think NT is doing the community a terrible disservice in keeping the HS so large.

I'm also a former student and I didn't realize the education that I received from NT until I left. My first year at college has been academically boring compared to the challenging fast pace of the NT curriculum. Yes, NT clubs and sports often have to make cuts and sometimes it can get a little ridiculous, but that's the way the real world works. NT taught me that I need to truly put my heart into what I'm passionate about if I want to succeed. You can't expect to have it all handed to you. I appreciate my education from NT more now than I ever thought I would.

An amazing school. The athletics were top par for everything, and the academic standards overshadowed some colleges. The teachers are great overall, and the school atmosphere is upbeat and filled with school pride. Filled with good, caring, involved families that truely care about their students. The school had a lull in the early 2000's, but quickly made a comeback in the past years. I had no problems at this school, nor did the parents of any other students that me or my child knew. Great School!

As a current NTHS student, I feel the need to speak out. The administration is poor, rude, and refuses to accept responsibility for anything. They are quick to blame the parents or student in almost any situation. New Trier spends a much greater time trying to keep their 'reputation' up, rather than focus on the major problems the school currently faces: The drug use and sub-par teachers. Now, if you feel your child can do well in a large atmosphere with strict rules and a lot of heartbreak and rejection (due to its size, there really isn't much at the school that is 'no cut' - even the social work club makes significant cuts) I especially wouldn't reccomend the school for anyone with depression, ADD, OCD, or any other mental illness. They make no attempt to make accomadation for your children.

New Trier is a school resting on its laurels and has been a disappointment for us. We moved to the district for the high school and have found that its reputation far exceeds reality. Unfortunately, this reality is absent from the thinking of the faculty, administration and board. Teachers have ranged from poor to fair for the most part. The level of indifference from most teachers is deplorable. The school is a classic case of what was an outstanding institution in its past in denial of the issues that it faces. It is interesting to note that the ISAT scores of all the feeder schools to New Trier have scores 5 to 10 points higher than those reported at the high school level. There are many explanations for the results, but a total lack of accountability. I would think twice about sending your kids here.

I agree with the post of January 20,2008. NT is great for overachievers but leave the mass middle behind--- most athletics are unavailable except to those who have trained since preschool and the advisory system is largely ineffective. I've had two sons at NT and would not do it again. It's not for everyone.

I had a terrible experience at NT. Found teachers mostly aloof and uncaring. Sports for the average or even above average athlete unattainable because of the large student body. I did not blossom until college and then medical school. My best experiences at NT were Art History, Wood Shop, and Stage Crew.

Amazing, the academics are the best around, we win every sport. Its the school kids are jealous not to go to.

This school is amazing. It has a high graduation rate, great academics, and fantastic athletics. Despite academics, NT athletics are amazing, and the school has an amazing sense of pride. The school seems to be more like a sophisticated college atmosphere than a high school. When it comes down to it, magnet or not, NT is the best!

I am a former graduate of NT and now with children, I am moving my family to the North Shore area so they can experience a New Trier education. I still remain close with many of my NT classmates.

My children are now adults, and we are still seeing the good effect of the New Trier education.

It has all: majority of the teachers are excellent, the program is challenging and most of the parents are involved. A high-income area whose residents accept higher taxes to maintain a top level school.

Some concern that the pressure is high for kids, but overall, the opportunities and academic programs far outweigh any drawbacks.

Very, very involved adminsitration. They do a great job of keeping up with the needs of students, in spite of the large size of the school.

Due to its size it is an intimidating place for some students who are from smaller environments. The advisory system (home room)is a great system that works very well to personalize the experience. Academics are great. The competition to get in to certain clubs, plays and sports is daunting and can lead to a feeling of exclusion for some. Academics are so high that an A/B student can end up near the bottom of the class ranking if they did not take some advance placement courses that have more weight in the ranking. This may have changed in the last two years since our daughter graduated.

This school is absolutely amazing. I graduated from New Trier, and I am about to be a sophmore at Princeton. This school offered everything that could be offered. It's funding was endless, since the school is in such an influential area, being located right on the north shore. I competed in football, and tennis while at New Trier. Also, away from sports, the school has an excellent accademic program which i think is outstanding. In my opinion, I think that New Trier's curriculum is much more advanced than that of Glenbrook North's, and Adlai E. Stevenson's. The entire faculty is absolutely outstanding, and I would advise anyone who is wondering what area to move to, to move to New Trier Township, because it is the best you can get.

As a recent alumna of New Trier, I look back with extreme gratitude and praise of my high shcool. It is a shining star of our township, a unique and elite public school that gives students the best of everything. There is no limit to the educational and extracurricular experiences available to kids, including the more than 300 teachers and 100+ clubs. It's operating budget is bigger than the city it's situated in, which affords New Trier to give the best to its students. Donald Rumsfeld, Virginia Madsen, and Charleton Heston are even former alumni.

I do not care what anyone else says about New Trier, it is hands down the best high school in Illinois. It offers everything: outstanding athletics, academics that can't be compared and a top fine/performing arts program. I was involved in all three from 2000-2004, and I can say that New Trier prepared me very well for college in every possible aspect. New Trier produces leaders and some of the brightest kids in the state. Some of the other reviews say that kids can get lost in the system, but I retort that claim by noting the multiple levels of classes students of different abilities can take and the endless resources of advisors, teachers, etc. to seek out. Yes, some say the school is competitive, but I was able to not get wrapped into that. Overall, I wouldn't have wanted to get my HS education anywhere else in the country.

I am a Junior at New Trier, currently. The school is an excellent school with fantatstic music, art, athletic, and academic programs. The large majority of teachers there are excellent, but like all large schools it has its drawbacks. the administation is bogged down by a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy, and it truly is a pressure cooker. However to be fair, even though it is a pressure cooker, there are free tutoring services available through the school, and most teacher will meet with you before an after school. Also the extensive club offering, including intramural, non competitive sports, do allow for a release after school from much of the pressure. This howver brings an added stressor sometimes, as many students feel pressure to become involved in as many extracurriculars as possible. Overall, a great school, with some drawbacks.

I'm a senior at New Trier right now. I've found my experiance there to be a pretty good one. It's a great school that has anything a kid could want. The extra-curricular activities are numerous and the kids are great. I would say that the only setback is the fact that it is such a large school, although there are tons of teachers so class sizes never really get too large.

Great school on the resume. They do well in comparison to other schools because of inherent advantages. Spending is $18,000/student, but that amount excludes academic tutoring for half the students paid for by their parents. Don't expect to be in the performing arts or varsity sports unless you have outside coaching. They are especially excellent in the country club sports such as swimming, golf, and tennis. The faculty has tremendous freedom and few standards. Some teachers are outstanding educators and tough graders. Others are entertaining, but omit covering the basics for the courses. Be careful in congratulating your student for good grades since 'A's' are ubiquitous by some of the faculty. Don't be surprised if your student receives an 'A' one year and has major trouble the next year; the problem stems from the previous year's teacher, but it is too late; thus, hire a tutor.

I agree with August 2003. Unless your child is a top star the rest of them get lost in the system. The administration will not take responsible for problems at the school including the excessive drug use right on school property. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on private schools.

New Trier is a great place for students to attend. I am an alumni as well as my three children. It is a competetive school, but offers a wide variety of classes and extra-curricular activities. It is also known for its outstanding sports, winning many state titles. It has a great theatre and music program as well. This school gives your child opportunities that many neighboring highschools don't. It is easy to become involved in the school since there is a variety of clubs. NT has a variety of electives students can take to focus on their career goals. NT is a great place for your child to gain a great education in a welcoming environment!

Although NTHS has been referred to as the 'pressure cooker school', it gives students many opportunities for success. The student population is large, so the academic/social pressure can be intense. However, NTHS's competitiveness prepares students for college life and beyond. Though some times were rough, I believe I received an excellent education and graduated from NTHS with great memories that I will remember forever. Go Trevs!

The teacher quality varies from excellent to poor but no one will admit this. NTHS is for 'stars' only. It is an academic pressure cooker that destroys kids who do not conform to stereotypes of 'perfect kids.' Few people in the community will discuss these problems--most just quietly remove their children to private schools because the administration is very defensive and quick to blame any problem on parents. NTHS will brag about its academic successes but don't believe it is a happy place for adolescents to be--it isn't.

New Trier is an outstanding school with excellent teachers that motivate and challenge students to excel in all areas. With an astounding variety of choices for clases and activities, New Trier was without a doubt the best high school I could ever hope to attend. Clases are taught on many different levels, so no matter what level the student is at, there is always a teacher and class there to help them along the way. On top of the great education and extracurriculars, New Trier is full of great students, and you can make some of the best friends you will ever have there.
