Chicago City Day School Reviews

we were very excited by acceptance to this scholl, but soon were bitterly disappointed; as one of the reviewers noted, if you child is not like others, headmistress doesn't want him/her. academical skills are not on the list of teachers' priorities; but little 'pet' projects of Mrs. Clayton are. Lack of diversity and, most of all, inability of many teachers to grasp the concepts of cultural difference, bilinguality, and different temperaments are striking. fundraising is the first priority; I understand they need endorsemets, but should't it be more subtle. anyway, don't waste your money; if headmistress disliked you, look for new school.

This school has a few good classes with great teachers. But don't be deceived by the appearance. This school cares more about the appearance than the students.

This school offers wonderful foreign language, and science programs. It offers art as well as technology classes. This school has a beautiful appearance on the in and outside. The teachers teach the kids to have discipline and have fun at the same time. Student learn many things everyday.

This school is more 'seem' than 'is'. Appearances and orderliness are cultivated at the expense of student needs. Decisions that should be made by faculty are sifted by administrators while administrative responsibilities that directly effect a child go neglected.

Chicago City Day School has a really terrific facility. It is a terrible shame that the school has large student/teacher ratios, extraordinarily over-crowded classrooms, a non-communicative headmistress.

My child attended CCDS from JK through 8th grade. He was accepted at the three best private high schools in chicago, Walter Payton, and into the I.B. program at Lincoln Park High School. While Mrs. Clayton is a dominant force at the school, she's an advocate for children. Today, my child is attending one of the most prestigious colleges in the USA. As are most of his CCDS Alumni.

We have been more than happy at Chicago City Day School. Our children love their school and leave their school with a feeling of accomplishment each day. They are academically challenged and love their teachers. We know we made the right choice by sending our children to a school where they are made to feel secure and confident each day.

The school bills itself as on par with Latin, Parker and Lab, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The education offered is adequate and the facilities are outstanding - but that's it. The school is a heartless, souless, sad place.

The administration is the worst part about the school, especially the principal. The education is good, but not better than much less expensive or free options. It is a very nice, clean, lux, safe physical environment, but maybe a little too sterile, a little too removed from reality. There is virtually no diversity. We wish we had gone elsewhere.

City Day has been a terrible dissapointment to us as well as our kids. Public school kids in the city seem to be receiving at least as good an education. The school is beautiful in terms of the building and gardens. If your child has issues at all, needs any special consideration, or isn't just like the others, this isn't the place for you. Further, regardless of what statistics the school gives, in truth classrooms are crowded and there are too few teachers. The Chicago Public School kids get a better student-teacher ratio than kids at City Day.

The academics are average, certainly nothing special. The classes are small, but attention is not individualized. Its hard for parents to have meaningful involvement since there is little communication.

We were very excited about this school at first. But there are huge problems here - and you can certainly do better in Chicago. Biggest problems: the headmistress runs the school as if she owned it (she doesn't - its a non-profit), and does not take input from anyone; poor discipline in classrooms, very rambunctious atmosphere; teachers are virtually inaccessible - no email, no voice mail, no interest; very little interest at teacher or headmistress level in addressing concerns raised by parents; school lags in basic nutritional standards (food is described as 'healthy' but in reality kids get very high-sugar content food daily); On positive side, special subject teachers in foreign language and science seem very strong, and if you never have to deal with admin you may like it.

Outstandingly rich program, starting in JK. The best student/teacher ratio in the league. Excellent facility.
