Posted By: parent Quality Score: decline 2008-04-15 “Whoever posted 'Good school. Good students...' must be at some other St. Ailbe. The school is an absolute joke. The principal is never present mentally or physically. The office staff is discourteous and lacks knowledge in professionalism. The sanitation conditions of the school are disgusting. My child has often complained of foul odor in the restrooms as well as in the school. During the winter, please make sure your insurance is current because the grounds are not shoveled or salted. Discipline and safety concerns for the children are absent. Recently, I've been informed of illegal drugs being brought into the school. You would think parents would have been notified by the school, however, in my case, I was informed by my child. The only positive about the school is the teachers. While the teachers and the curriculum are excellent, the administration is incompetent and unfriendly. The principal is always too 'busy to talk to parents about their issues and concerns. She certainly isn't busy ensuring proper discipline and sanitation in the school. Discipline is a joke since the adminitrators are neither present nor consistant. The only positive thing I have to say about the school is concerning the teachers. They are truely caring and passionate about what they do. However, if conditions don't improve, even that may change. I was on the verge of removing my child from the school but am satisfied with the changes the current Principal has made in the last few years. In my opinion there was a lot of cleaning up that the Adminstration had to do. Not all parents are the same but for some reason they treat parents with a lack of respect and disconcern for a child. This school thus far is the worst I have seen. I have a child who was attending this school for 2 years straight nothing but headaches. The children's safety is not a priority to St. Sabina at all. They charge you for 12 months of tuition although there is only 10 months of school. They only have one goal- Money that is it.. Her cumulative score was up 8 points. Also important, she has made friends and likes school. My reasons for leaving include curriculum, tuition price and administration. I was told by the school's administration that the curriculum was academically sound, and test scores were good. I am extremely disappointed by the curriculum oveall, and it doesn't stress language arts which is essential to success on the language driven Terra Nova Tests. Each grade is a hit or miss - some teachers good some bad. This school prides itself on their extracurriclars choir, band and drama classes rather than academics. In closing, it seems the administration is in transistion with a 2nd year principal who needs more training in leadership, professionalism, and working better with parents. My advice - before registering here, DO your homework and review. Yes, there are some issues I don't like, but what school doesn't have issues. There is a new principal and there have been some changes...for the better. The school is continually growing and improving. All the staff is very pleasant and supportive and the parents seem nice. The curriculum seems to be improving and I've been told most of the eighth graders got accepted into good schools. I asked a teacher if my daugther could take her books home. If math was taught that day, please bring the math book home, if reading, bring the reading book home, etc. Well the teacher collected the books and placed the books on the shelf. From Aug to Oct. I kept asking for books but my daughter never brought the books home. Well I asked the principal if she was aware of what was going on because I was frustrated. I am thinking of taking my children out of this school. The principal replied some people like St. Ailbe and some people don't. For the people who dont like St. Ailbe. They should find another school. I'm very pleased with the school and with her class in particular. There are wonderful opportunities--she plays flute in the band and writes for the school newspaper. Other activities include choir, a wide range of sports and several clubs. Students have a significant amount of homework each week night and major projects, both individual and group work on a regular basis. Academic instruction includes the usual math, reading, spelling and English--both writing and grammar, but there are also classes in Spanish, computer, drama, art, music and PE. It's a Catholic school so there is weekly Mass on Thursday, daily prayers in the classroom and religion classes. The principal knows each students by name. She knows not only their names, but actually knows each students.
