St. John Berchmans School Reviews

My son had an excellent experience in the pre-k program at St. John Berchmans. His class had 18 children with a teacher and full-time assistant teacher. Both the teacher and the assistant were professional yet warm and caring. He enjoyed going to school very much. SJB offered early drop-off and extended care on an as-needed basis for an extremely reasonable fee. The flexible hours, fairly low tuition and -- most importantly -- warm and caring environment made this an excellent choice for our family.

St. John has been an incredible experience for our family. Everyone knows each other and all the teachers work collaboratively. All of the teachers are young, fun, and have a very hands-on approach to everything. The school offers great Title 1 tutoring, an excellent Rainbow program, and it s always very welcoming to parents. The 4th grade class had only 16 kids this past school year. There have been some changes in the past two years. They hired a new Head of Schools, Ms. Roket. She s been an okay addition to the staff but I feel she needs to be more authoritative with the staff and a bit warmer to the parents. Sometimes she comes across as very dry but that may just be her personality. She replaced Sr. Joyce who ran the school for more than 15 years and

I have mixed feelings about St. Johns. While my kids were in the primary grades I loved it. However, this passed year has been anything but. I feel like a certain teacher in an intermediate grade is just not doing her job well! I feel that more should be done to get away with just focusing reading instruction using only a basel program. There has to be more literature used as well. Teaching children how to read is not enough. Standardized testing today requires them to also be able to think critically about the text as well. Unfortunately, that is not what was taught this pass year, but she did come home with pretty pictures!! I just hope this is not a sigh of what's to come. Teachers should do a better job in communicating with parents. There should be more accountability for teachers by the administration.

After researching an exhaustive list of schools, I finally started touring my top choices. It sounds hard to describe, but the 'feel' of St. John Berchmans was just right for my family. From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by the friendly staff and introduced to all of the teachers during the tour. In fact, when we were ready to leave, my preschool daughter cried because she wasn't ready to go! I was impressed by their technology, diversity, wonderful outdoor playground, and the curriculum which included Spanish, computers, gym, music, and art. This school is a hidden treasure.

This is a great school, staff is highly qualified, the school is clean, the students here are very happy to be in such a great school.

My daughter is going to attend PreK3 in the fall. She is currently in the summer camp program and we loveit. She goes everyday from 9am to 3pm and spends the rest of the day telling me about all the fun she's had. Its entirely play based and the faculty is excellent. Everyday when I drop her off they tell me about her friends and her interactions and again when I pick her up they give me individual highlights of her day. Its amazing. Granted, there are only five students per teacher during camp but its still an indication of their love for teaching and their dedication to individual students. I'm so happy we found St John's. When we came to visit we were given a tour by the principal, Sr. Joyce. I was immediatly taken by her love for the school.

My son graduated from St. John Berchmans School and is a sophmore at Quigley. My twin daughters attend St. John Berchmans and they love it because individuality and respect is taught daily in their curriculum. My children have scored in the 90 percentile in the Terra Nova standard test. Music, art, religion and computer classes are part of the course outline. Sports, Drama, and Voice and instrument classes are available after school. Parents do get involved with our school. I would encourage parents to call and visit the school on a school day. I did it! Safety and security was a concern of mine. Before school and after school daycare is available from 7:00am - 6:00pm. Children come from different ethnic groups. I am very content with St. John Berchmans School and so will you. Nelly
