Three Brothers: True Serbian and Eastern European fare

In 1950, Branko Radiecevich's father purchased an old Schlitz tavern as a business for his three sons who he hoped would come to Milwaukee from Eastern Europe. Upon their arrival, Three Brothers restaurant and tavern was established and has sinced grown into one of this city's most beloved eateries.

True Serbian and Eastern European fare draws patrons from across the U.S. as well as down the street. Yet it is more than the food that has brought  this East Bay area restaurant much acclaim. Three Brothers serves up an atmosphere that is difficult to find in these times. Along with the old and worn wooden floor are plain formica tables with top-rated entrees served on mismatched china. Named one of Milwaukee's most romantic restaurants because of its casual and intimate setting, it remains a wonderful place to dine for both families and couples.

The most popular if not intriguing entree on the menu is the Burek, a bountiful layering of paper-thin pastry stuffed with either spinach and cheese or meat. Make note, however, that it takes the kitchen 45 minutes to prepare a Burek and wise patrons call their order in ahead of time.

If your tastebuds lean towards Greek, European or Eastern European food, you'll find the Three Brothers menu brims with options.

Perhaps the most intriguing menu item is their burek. Made with think layers of phylo dough and stuffed with either spinach and cheese or beef, this hearty, hearty entre takes 45 minutes to prepare. Other customer favorites include roast lamb, stuffed grape leaves served with a wine sauce and a more than filling portion of eggplant moussaka.

Serving everything from roast duck, roast goose, quail and lamb as well as several vegertarian entrees,  the restaurant is a destination for the hungry as well as diners who like to linger over their meal adding good conversation and perhaps a slice of strudel and a glass or two a Serbian wine or a shot of Slivovitz, a potent plum brandy.

HelloChicago Tip: Literally family run, Three Brothers doesn't accept credit cards, so remember to add cash to your wallet. They will also accept checks.
