Portillo's Hot Dogs: diner dishes done right
There are few things more Chicago than a classic hot dog, on poppy seed bun,with all the fixings. And few places do this Chicago tradition proud more than Portillo’s Hot Dogs, Inc.
Started in 1963 in a small trailer, this funky diner chain has since expanded to more than 40 locations, with 30-plus in Illinois, and a few in California and Indiana. Portillo’s restaurants feature classic old-school diner décor, with bright neon lights, vinyl retro booths, oldies on the speakers and tons of kitschy decor. Vintage posters mingle with memorabilia from the 1920s through ’60s, and each location has a different collection of classic treasures.
The funky finds may get crowds in the door, but the food's what keeps Portillo’s patrons coming back for more. Hot dogs get the full treatment here, and are served up either classic or jumbo, char-grilled or with chili. Single or double burgers are char-broiled to tasty perfection, and the Italian beef sandwiches are so juicy that a handful of napkins aren’t enough.
Lighter options are available, like grilled chicken, an assortment of salads and even grilled tuna sandwiches and veggie-stuffed croissants. Healthy entrées mean you can splurge on sides, like the delectable crinkle-cut French fries or the tasty onion rings, which make this classic diner experience complete.
But nothing makes Portillo’s feel more like a blast from the past than their classic milk shakes and malts, available in, of course, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Don’t pass up the chocolate cake shake, where pieces of Portillo’s chocolate cake get folded right in for a double dose of diner dessert!
If in a hurry, Portillo’s offers drive-through and catering services, but then patrons miss out on the fun of dining in. With such an entertaining atmosphere and tasty treats, Portillo’s is a winner every time. It’s classic Chicago, done right.
