Hamburger joint Epic Burger subscribes to the rule that “not all burgers are created equal” giving it an advantage over every other preservative-filled fast food establishment. Their burgers and fries are made from fresh and all natural ingredients that support local farmers.
Opened a couple of years ago in the South Loop near Columbia College, the owners embarked on a mission to prove burgers could be healthier --“a more mindful burger,” their slogan reads. Everything the restaurant presents from the napkins to the meat itself is environmentally conscious, and biting into a turkey, chicken, angus or portobello mushroom veggie burger, one will immediately taste the difference.
A tangy Epic sauce, lettuce, pickles and either raw or cooked onions pile high onto a wheat or white bun with cheese, cage-free fried egg and nitrate-free bacon are offered as extras for an additional charge. Even the ketchup is organic.
Hungry customers can sit down in the retro-decorated dining room consisting of brown and orange tones and hanging lamps, or get the food to go. Since the burgers are made to order with fresh ingredients and not frozen patties, the average price is more than at a franchised fast food chain, so the combo is the best deal.
Epic Burger’s menu has four different combos, each with a burger and fries and choices of a fountain drink, bottled beverage, a shake or smoothie. The latter products are especially delicious and even somewhat healthy. Shakes are made with fat-free yogurt and organic milk and smoothies are blended with real fruit goodness.
HelloChicago Tip: Epic Burger just expanded and opened a new location in Lincoln Park (1000 W. North Avenue) cooking up the same scrumptious burgers, but this location has free parking in a parking lot.
