One of Chicago's most interesting if not ethnically diverse neighborhoods is Bridgeport, once known as the town of Hardscrabble.
A great way to get to know this traditionally working class community is by grabbing a table and joining the locals at The Bridgeport Coffee house. Founded in 2000, this cafe brims with colorful clientele--from artists to construction workers to Chicago police--and offers homemade pastries, soups and sandwiches.
Besides serving great coffee--the owners run their own roasting company--The Bridgeport Coffee Company--the cafe hosts everything from bake sales to small film festivals.
Located in an old storefront, the cafe has outdoor seating in the warmer months and large windows offer a panoramic view for top-notch people watching in this politically active community. Although small, the atmosphere is vibrant and the staff, incredibly friendly. What's more, the WiFi is free.
If you've wanted to get to know Bridgeport a bit better, this cafe is a great entry. Rumor has it they serve some of the best chocolate donuts in the city.
