Dec 20, 2009 - ANNUAL Holiday Tea at the Drake Hotel's Palm Court
Every year we treat ourselves to a Holiday Tea. We have come to love going to The Drake Hotel's Palm Court for this. The setting in the Palm Court is lovely and their afternoon tea is classic - they have served the likes of The Empress of Japan, Queen Elizabeth , Lady Di, and the esteemed ladies of our Busy-As-A-Bee Bookclub!! Each person gets their own pot of tea (your choice of tea from a large selection) or hot cocoa. There is live harp music, strolling carollers, and plenty of tasty tea sandwiches, savories, and sweets. Check out their menu: The Drake's Afternoon Tea Menu HOW THIS WORKS: 1. Mark your calendar for Sunday afternoon, December 20th, but check back since I cannot post the exacat time (approx 2PM) until I have a firm reservation set with the Palm Court. 2. Bring CASH to give me to pay for your tea that afternoon - I will post the exacty amount, but with tip figure on giving me $32. IF you elect to also have champagne, add another $10. 3. Arrive at the Palm Court about 15 minutes ahead of our scheduled time. 4. This is a lovely outing where guests are welcome and many routinely bring their sister, mom, or a girlfriend to join us! Late December is a wonderful time of year on Michigan Avenue and in the "loop". Many of our members use the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping or to check out the holliday windows before or after having afternoon tea. Many arrange carpools with other bookclub members to save on parking. Since we will have met earlier in December, this is an "extra" bookclub meeting and is unabashedly social. You deserve to pamper yourself a little and relax despite the holiday bustle. If you feel you "must" read a book for the meeting, try browsing through "Chicago's Grand Hotels: The Palmer House, The Drake and the Chicago Hilton" by Robert V. Allegrini at your local library (or it costs about $20 and could be a nice gift if you have a Chicago-history buff on your holiday gift list!)
