The Windy City Rollers, Chicago’s roller-derby stars, take to the track May 30 in their fifth season as they battle for a chance to play for the Ivy King Cup.
The Windy City Rollers are made up of four home teams — Manic Attackers, Hell’s Belles, Double Crossers and The Fury. They've proven to be a major force in the derby world, which the sport's national association says is the nation's fastest-growing women’s sport. The 64-member league includes businesswomen, teachers, moms and students who by night become daunting derby skaters known as Juanna Rumble, Val Capone and Anne Arkie.
Cheer as the amazing Manic Attackers row with the first-place hellacious Hell’s Belles and the dastardly Double Crossers mightily take on The Fury. The Manic Attackers and the Double Crossers are tied for second place.
Founded in 2004, the Windy City Rollers first took to the track in 2005. Athletic and competitive, their bouts are exciting, exhibiting fast skating, strong hits, and impressive strategy. The home season runs from January through June, and the interleague season is January through November.
A portion of the proceeds from the May 30 bout will benefit Chicago’s East Village Youth Program, an organization dedicated to helping Latino youths prepare for college.
General admission tickets are $21 and $16 for students. The bout will be held at the University of of Illinois (at Chicago) Pavilion, at 525 S. Racine Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the action begins at 6 p.m.
