Willowbrook Wildlife Center brings local animals up close
Chicago may have two world-class zoos dedicated to caring for animals from around the world, but the Willowbrook Wildlife Center is making sure the local fauna are looked after as well. This treatment, rehabilitation and education center tends to thousands of injured and orphaned animals each year and teaches visitors what they can do to lend a hand in the process.
Located in the west suburb of Glen Ellyn, Willowbrook Wildlife Center has been in operation since 1952. Animals ranging from birds to snakes, foxes to bobcats, and everything in between are brought in when injured, and then rehabilitated and released back into the wild once they're well. Animals with life-altering injuries are either given a permanent home at the center or sent to similar wildlife centers throughout the nation to be tended for the remainder of their lives.
A dedicated team of wildlife experts and volunteers makes sure all animal residents of the center are looked after. The team provides valuable information on the natural world to visitors young and old. Guests can explore the visitors center, where rescued animals make amazing recoveries thanks to the team's dedication and expertise.
An outdoor exhibit area lets visitors get close to rehabilitated bald eagles, wild cats and other larger animals. An extensive nature trail lets explorers wander 40 acres of native prairies, savannas and woodlands, and provides the opportunity for guests to learn about local habitats and wildlife. A lovely butterfly garden teaches guests about native plants and insects, and a nearby covered picnic area makes a great stop for a rest and lunch.
