When SPACE opened in Evanson in 2008, the challenge was to see if the 3,000 sq ft music venue would be able to compete with Chicago clubs.
A few short months later, SPACE was booking top acts and word was out -- the Evanston room was the place to hear music. Short for Society for the Preservation of Art & Culture in Evanston, SPACE, with a 250-souls capacity, is a very intimate and warm setting. Custom curtains cover the exposed brick walls near the stage and soft lighting hangs from the high ceilings. Simple, yet elegant, SPACE is designed for music, with extra care taken in the sound system as well as acoustics.
With the sound being so smooth, hearing music at SPACE is akin to being at a smaller concert venue. The owners, all of whom have roots in Evanston, share musical backgrounds. SPACE has its own recording studio and shows are recorded for their library.
While most of the tickets are for standing room (no area in the room is further than 25 feet from the 16' by 18' stage), SPACE offers reserved seating, and ticket prices vary per show. The bookings range from folk classics such as Loudon Wainright to New Riders of the Purple Sage, Asleep At the Wheel or Leon Russell. Whether it be jazz, blues, hip hop or rock, you'll find it on SPACE's line-up.
There's a small bar within SPACE that serves top brands. While they don't prepare food, brick oven pizzas may be ordered from Union Pizzeria located directly in front of SPACE.
If you're accustomed to heading into Chicago to hear live music, think twice. Check the calendar for SPACE by clicking here. After the first performance, you'll be hooked on this great venue.
