Schaumburg Flyers: Big league fun, minor league price
If Chicago Cubs tickets are too pricey and tough to find, then a trip to the minor leagues might be right for you. The northwest suburban Schaumburg Flyers offer all the action and entertainment of their big-league brethren, but at a much nicer price.
A member of the six-team professional independent Northern League, the Flyers play out of Alexian Field, a 6,000-plus seat stadium open since 1999 and nicknamed “Mini-Wrigley Field” for its similar design to the Cubs home turf.
At the spacious suburban stadium, fans can watch the action from the sizeable stands, or picnic on the lawn with a great view. Kids will enjoy the antics of mascot “Bearon” as he leads the crowd in games, and weekly post-game firework displays and live musical performances get everyone clapping.
While the Cubs and White Sox get the lion’s share of attention in Chicago baseball, the minor league Flyers get crowds cheering as they give it their all each game to bring home the win. Flyers players often have Triple A or major league experience, and put on a terrific display of athleticism and entertainment at every game.
Since major league tickets can run several hundred dollars each, the Schaumburg Flyers are a downright steal, averaging just $5 for lawn/bleacher seats or $10 for reserved seats. Parking and favorite baseball snacks might tack on a tad more, but it’s nothing compared to what a day at a big league game would cost you.
Though the Flyers may not be as high profile as other Chicago teams, they're definitely worth rooting for and spending a sunny afternoon or evening with. A bleacher seat, a cold beer, a scorecard and a smile all make for a big league experience with a minor league price tag.
