While at Morseland on a recent Sunday night, a power outage darkened the Rogers Park neighborhood where this local bar, music venue and restaurant is located.
Rather than cease business, Mallet Madness, a jazz ensemble playing vibes that evening made music in the dark while the drinks continued flowing at the Morseland as the locals poured in. That's the spirit in this locally owned tavern that seems to maintain the feel of a local hangout, attracting both a young and older crowd.
Live music is the draw and the line up is diverse. Jazz musicians are featured each Monday and the Morseland calendar (their website details a monthly schedule) features everything from Latin to blues to rock. During the summer months, Morseland's outdoor cafe opens.
Extremely casual, the interior is lined with small, dark wood tables and booths and the bar runs the length of the tavern. Living up to their motto "good eats, nice beats" Morseland's menu strays far from the usual bar food. Offering sandwiches, salads and main entrees, you'll find everything from burgers to steak to catfish.
Two notables are the Firecracker Turkey and Five Finger Chili and the Caribbean Pork Diablo Sandwich made from slow cooked spicy pork shoulder that pairs well with a dark beer.
If your in the mood for live music but don't want to have to fight the city crowds and roam the streets for parking, plan a night at the Morseland.
