Chicago Farmers Markets: fresh foods at fun locations

It may be tough to find a farm near Chicago and its 'burbs, but farmers markets bring farm-fresh food right to Chicagoans throughout the summer. Markets in 20 neighborhoods throughout the city sell fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants from more than 70 vendors — each aiming to giving patrons the best products of the season.

City living can make Chicagoans forget that Illinois is a major agricultural center. It's the largest producer of pumpkins in the world, the third-largest producer of popcorn in the country and the home of 1.4 million head of cattle. The state produces more than 800 million eggs annually, and it's estimated that one Illinois farmer feeds 129 people per year.

When it comes to bringing top quality ingredients to farmers markets, Illinois definitely has it covered. From May to October, more than 30 markets sell their wares from downtown to uptown, Lincoln Park to Lincoln Square, and everywhere in between.

On Sundays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the southwest Pilsen Community Market features bee products, gourmet cheeses, baked goods and soaps, along with specialty items like handmade clothing, jewelry, handbags and hats.

Lincoln Park’s Green City Market features 45 certified organic farmers Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The weekly market also offers cooking demonstrations, educational programs for kids and talks on nutrition and sustainable farming.

Farmers market patrons can even shop in popular Chicago tourist spots. The Sears Tower has a weekly market every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Museum of Science and Industry has one every other Friday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., and the Museum of Contemporary Art has a weekly market Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Even if you’re not a culinary aficionado, there’s sure to be something appealing at any one of the farmers markets throughout Chicago. They’re a great way to bring healthy products to Chicagoans while benefiting Illinois farmers and a fun activity nearly any day of the week.
