The oldest and most overlooked Museum in the City. The Chicago Historical Society offers a wide range of programs, everything for kids on up. The staff and volunteers are both helpful, friendly and knowledgable. If you ever wanted to "really" learn about the city of big shoulders this is THE place to do it. They also have a wide range of information and knowledge of general American History as well. And of course anyone who is at all interested in Lincoln and the Civil War their "A House Divided" exhibit is a must see.

if you're a native Chicagoan or in town for a few days, the Chicago Historical Society is an excellent place to learn Chicago's history. Once you've saturated yourself with Chicago history, you can get a snack at the Big Shoulders Cafe and then roam through the museum store. The store offers a large number of books on the history of Chicago along with some souvenir items. If you miss the CHS on a trip to Chicago, you can always stop by their store in Terminal 3 of O'Hare Airport. PROS: Excellent place to learn some Chicago history. CONS:

This museum has a detailed and informative series of exhibits that can add an incredible depth to your knowledge of Chicago's history. Tours and talks by knowledgable staff, as well as frequent turnover of special exhibits make it a museum worthy of repeat visits. The Big Shoulders Cafe has an unbeatable Sunday brunch.

my children really enjoyed this museum, and have gone back with friends. Great sports exhibit, and lots of information on historical Chicago. On a level where adults can learn, and kids, too.
