Shaw's Crab House: Surf and turf done right

Coastal cities like Boston may be famous for their fresh seafood, but Shaw’s Crab House makes sure Midwest Chicago is always a contender. Once named one of Forbes top three oyster bars in the country, Shaw’s attracts loyal Chicago seafood lovers with its tasty surf and turf.

Started in 1984 in what was once an old newspaper warehouse downtown, Shaw’s quickly caught on with its funky 1940s décor. The jazzy speak-easy restaurant served up fresh seafood like crab, lobster and oysters, along with pasta, steaks and all the trimmings.

Now with another location in the northwest suburb of Schaumburg, Shaw’s continues its fresh-seafood tradition daily in its grand main dining rooms and retro oyster bars.

Marked by polished wood, leather banquettes, art deco fixtures and Duke Ellington on the speakers, the main dining area is a throwback to another time. Here guests can indulge in sumptuous cocktails with their steak or seafood, or even partake in Shaw’s fresh sushi menu, with selections like sashimi and unagi (BBQ eel).

The nearby oyster bar presents a more laid-back atmosphere, like a jazz hall come to life. Visitors can watch shuckers at work, partake in fresh oysters, and wash them down with any number of beers on tap or mixed cocktails. With sporting events on in the background, Shaw’s oyster bar is a big step up from the typical sports-bar fare, and the ambiance is more than memorable.

Though entrees can be pricey – seafood dishes run more than $20, and steaks more than $30 – an evening at Shaw’s feels like more an event than a simple meal. It’s a trip back in time, where servers make sure you’re satisfied, your glass is always full, and the seafood tastes fresh and light.

Shaw’s large menu and lively atmosphere ensure that there’s something for everyone, and that no one leaves without a smile.
