Lalo's Restaurant: big, bold Mexican meals

Published: Apr 9, 2009

Chicago may be 1,400 miles from the border, but distance is no impediment to finding great Mexican food — thanks to Lalo’s Mexican Restaurants.  A Chicago tradition for nearly 30 years, this local chain is bringing big flavor and even bigger margaritas to the masses.

Originally just one small restaurant in Chicago’s Mexican Community, Lalo’s has now expanded to 12 locations throughout Chicago and the outlying suburbs.  Remaining family-owned and true to its authentic, top quality roots, Lalo’s attracts a loyal following at each location.  The big portions and mammoth drinks keep locals coming back for more.

There are the expected offerings on the Lalo’s menu: burritos (the size of a dinner plate), enchiladas (smothered in sauce) and tacos (any way you want).  But it’s the sauces that seem to elevate the typical fare to something special.  Mole, adobo, green tomatillo, guacamole, spicy red; they all add a kick to chicken, pork, beef, and whatever entrée they’re included in.

If the huge portions aren’t enough to sate a big appetite, there are complimentary chips and tangy salsa, as well as a delicious chicken soup that hits the spot.  Appetizers include quesadillas, tamales, and a queso fundido (melted cheese with choice of topping) that gets repeated raves.

Great food is a big draw at Lalo’s, but the drinks can be a meal themselves.  A small strawberry daiquiri could get two people tipsy, and a large margarita could fit in a punch bowl.  They’re a perfect complement to a spicy dish, but watch out for the price; one drink can cost as much as an entrée here.

With dishes ranging from $11 to $17 each, and drinks from $9 up, Lalo’s is definitely not a budget-friendly night out.  A meal for two ran $60, but included enough leftovers for lunch the next day and a big smile of satisfaction after the last bite.  So if you’re looking for authentic south-of-the-border taste without the pesky travel, then check out the nearest Lalo’s.
