Omega Restaurant: Plentiful portions for a puny price
Nearly every neighborhood has one, or should: a comfortable family restaurant with motherly waitresses, good food and low prices.
Omega Restaurant in the northwest suburb of Schaumburg is definitely that — and a whole lot more. Serving home-style food at wallet-friendly prices, this local arm of a Chicago-area chain always attracts a crowd with mammoth menus, plentiful portions and a delectable bakery on site.
Breakfast lovers will be blown away by the selection, with everything from omelets to hash brown skillets, crepes and waffles. And don’t forget the pancakes; they come in apple, strawberry, blueberry, pecan, potato and so on. With breakfast served all day, any time's a good time to sample the delicious French toast, steak and eggs or bagels and lox.
Lunch is typical diner fare taken to the next level. There are triple-decker sandwiches, melts and burgers with all sorts of toppings — nearly all are served with a complimentary bowl of hearty soup. Those watching their waistlines can sample salads and other low-fat dishes such as broiled chicken with fruit.
Omega does breakfast and lunch proud, but dinner's really where the restaurant shines. Greek, Italian, American classics and seafood all mingle on the menu, and the portions are more than generous. Most entrees come with either soup or salad (tip: try the creamy garlic dressing), but, by far, the best part is the included bakery item to finish the meal.
Staring into the glass bakery case filled with so many decadent treats, it feels almost impossible to pick just one. Strawberry shortcakes compete with brownies, carrot cake with German chocolate, and the size-of-a-dinner-plate apple turnovers look too big for a family, never mind one person! All these and more are available to take home, along with the inevitable entrée leftovers, and are delicious the next day as a sweet treat.
Omega Restaurant in Schaumburg is one of six separately owned Chicago-area locations (Downers Grove, Niles, Warrenville, Lombard and Chicago). Menus and prices are not always consistent, but each has a bakery on site.
Any Omega is a safe bet, but the Schaumburg location is a definite must for fine family food and atmosphere. And perhaps the best part; low prices. Two diners can get baked breads, salads, entrees, desserts and coffee for $30. In this economy, that’s definitely a deal worth checking out.
