Walker Bros.: Pancakes, waffles and omelettes, oh my!

Sep 18, 2009

You don’t often see lines out the door at a pancake place, but then, not all pancake places are like Walker Bros.  Labeled “The Original Pancake House,” Walker Bros.’ old-time décor, great breakfast classics, and famously delicious apple pancake will have you believing it isn’t just the original, it’s the only pancake house worth visiting.

Originally opened by two brothers in Wilmette in 1960, Walker Bros. has since expanded to six locations across the Chicago area.  Famous for their breakfasts served all day, Walker Bros.’ menu overflows with delectable options, and loyal customers consistently pack each location for a taste.

Oven-baked omelettes are a popular favorite, with options like the Santa Fe (salsa and cheese), Mediterranean (feta and spinach) and Western (ham and green pepper).  The egg smorgasbord continues with basted eggs (served with bacon, sausage, ham or corned beef hash), tasty benedicts or eggs done any way you like ‘em, combined with toast or pancakes.

The pancakes are a tasty side or fantastic main dish, with options like the Danish garden (filled with broccoli, onions and cheese) or the German (a thin pancake with powdered sugar and lemon).  But the real stand-out here is the apple pancake, the pancake that put this place on the map.

Filled with fresh apples, cinnamon, sugar glaze and served up the size of a dinner plate, Walker Bros. apple pancake isn’t just a dish, it’s an event.  Part breakfast and dessert, it’s an ooey, gooey treat that makes everyone smile.

If the apple pancake isn’t for you, then other options include buttermilk, blueberry, banana, Georgia pecan, bacon (with bits of bacon in the pancake batter), wheat germ, potato, Swedish (served with lingonberries), chocolate chip, buckwheat and silver dollars.  There’s a pancake for every palate here, and each is delectable any time of day.

Other standouts include challah French toast, lox platters, crepes (French, cherry, banana, spinach, chocolate or chipotle chicken) or Belgian waffles (strawberry, pecan, blueberry or bacon).  Chances are, if it’s a breakfast favorite, Walker Bros. has it.

With several convenient locations, nice ambiance and dozens of dishes done right, Walker Bros. is a one-stop-breakfast shop.  It’s a tasty spot with something to appeal to every appetite, morning, noon or night.
