Goose Island Beer Company: a Cubs fan favorite

Published: May 1, 2009

Few things go better together than baseball and beer. Luckily for Chicago Cubs fans, there’s the Goose Island Brewing Company just a stone’s throw from historic Wrigley Field. Fans can kick back, watch the game, grab a tasty bite and enjoy one of dozens of craft beers brewed right on site.

One of two Goose Island breweries in Chicago, the business dates back to 1988 when beer-lover John Hall decided Chicago could use more than just mass-produced beer.

The original brewpub in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood allowed patrons to watch the brewing process while sampling a variety of distinct beers. Goose Island proved so popular that in 1995 another location was opened near Wrigley Field.

Today Goose Island brews more than 50 craft beers on site, which are bottled and shipped to 15 states and the U.K. Beers range from light to dark, ales to drafts, and include several seasonal selections.  The company also makes a variety of craft sodas, including root beer, orange cream and spicy ginger.

Many of Goose Islands craft beers can be sampled on tap at the brewpubs, and are accompanied by a wide bar menu, including starters, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and pub specialties like chicken pot pie and fish and chips. If you're feeling adventurous, the fried pickle appetizer is an unusual snack not to be missed.

For Cubs fans aren’t lucky enough to score a ticket, Goose Island is a great place to watch the game. There are nine TVs including three with giant projection screens.  After the final pitch, Goose Island fills up with thirsty game-attendees eager to give a play by play, and you may feel like you were right there with them.

While countless bars near Wrigley Field attract Cubs fans, Goose Island has become a neighborhood institution with its brewed on-site selections, laid-back atmosphere, quality menu and proximity to the field.  Goose Island Brewing Company has become to Wrigleyville what beer is to baseball: a perfect match.
