Evanston's Piccolo Theatre: Literally On The Fast Track.
Specializing in Commedia Dell' Arte, Evanston's Piccolo Theatre offers patrons an unusual experience on many levels. This highly acclaimed troupe has made its home in the Evanston Arts Depot--a rather fancy name for the renovated Main Street train station, a stop for the Metra commuter line.
Founded in 2001, Piccolo has attracted a loyal following as well as rave reviews for its comedic stagings. The theater is adjacent to the station's waiting room which also serves as a lobby. Seating an estimated 55 patrons, the performance space is intimate but well suited to the company's productions.
Yes, trains can sometimes be heard or felt during a performance and sometimes the rumble or whistle is incorporated into the script. Never, however, does the fact that Piccolo is located in the station deter from its work.
Granted, Chicago brims with great theatre and many small front companies. Piccolo should be counted among them. If you are looking to be entertained far from the hectic crowd of the city, this troupe will fit the bill. In addition to providing comic relief, Piccolo offers you the opportunity to see theater in the most uncommon of settings. What's more, you can take the train right to its front door if not its stage.
