The Morton Arboretum: The great outdoors just outside the city

When Chicagoans need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, there are few destinations better than the Morton Arboretum. A 1,700 acre natural wonderland in the west suburb of Lisle, the arboretum is a stellar collection of plants from around the globe, and a vital reminder of the importance of conservation.
Established in 1922 by the founder of the Morton Salt Company, the Morton Arboretum attracts more than three quarters of a million visitors a year, making it the third most-visited public garden in the country. The arboretum houses more than four thousand types of trees and plants from 40 countries, all resources for scientific study.
Visitors can explore the extensive grounds that include 500 acres of plant collections and gardens, 900 acres of woodlands, meadows, prairie, lakes and streams, 14 miles of trails and nine miles of roadways.
Featured gardens include the Fragrance Garden, a half-acre plot dedicated to flowers, fruit and foliage that delights the nose. The Ground Cover Garden, built in 1938, hosts more than 350 different plants, woody trees and shrubs that blanket the ground. The Four Seasons Garden is a small wonder, containing 70 different types of plants in just 2,000 square feet of space.
Both children and adults alike will enjoy the Maze Garden, a one-acre living puzzle. Guests will be challenged to find their way through, and lookout platforms built around a 60-foot tall Sycamore give a great view of the action below.
The Children’s Garden is another great spot for the whole family. This 4-acre area includes secret streams, slides down huge tree roots, climbing spots and year-round activities and programs that keep visitors of all ages entertained.
